Staff / Artist Friends

Since Hemlocks Studio began in 1997, Artist-friends have been its lifeblood. Some came to learn, some to teach, some to clean, some to cook. Returning every summer, each one shared his or her élan vital with all of us year after year. Together we imagine.

Clem Bedwell, a graduate of Auburn University, explores the landscape as elegantly spare statements of shape, space, light and shadow. He creates pieces that are tactile, ephemeral, engaging.

June Ellen Bradley lives within the art of nature as an herbalist, naturalist and an artist. She graduated from Wheaton College, studied Native American skills & philosophy with Tom Brown, Jr., apprenticed with herbalist Rosemary Gladstar and continues her studies at the Adawehi Institute in Columbus NC.

Padgett Cleveland, Citadel grad, retired civil engineer and fiduciary advisor, acts as an on sight consultant. Occasionally we listen to his advice.

Monita Mahoney focuses on watermedia exploration. An art administrator, teacher and mixed-media artist, she understands the process of making art and is an "ARTapedia" of tips, techniques and magic tricks.

Deborah Perkins spent her professional life in fashion and furniture design in Atlanta. She escaped to the mountains where she crafts landscapes and offers expert decluttering proposals. She paints with plants.

Danalee Pipes spent 20 years as an RN. She became a frequent student at Hemlocks, aptly absorbing techniques in every medium. She made herself irreplaceable and became the assistant director. She is currently consumed with the nuances of wax and pigment in encaustic.

Sue Russell has a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Georgia, an MA in Art/Art Ed from Arizona State University. She has taught art at every level. She worked, exhibited and lived in Saudi Arabia and Germany and traveled for 20 years. She declares that there may be instructors as good as she is, but there are none who are better. As studio director, she relies on artist-friends.

Helen Warren is a Charlestonian by birth, a horse person, and a plein air oil painter who paints with confidence. She and her husband took a year-long voyage across the Atlantic on their small sailboat with their children in tow…and wrote a book about it.

Beau Russell & Buddy Cleveland provide the security detail for Hemlocks Studio, the owners and guests. They are experts in their field.
