Gallery Two

Round and Around
I began painting circles, ellipses, wheels and the rhythm of life years ago. I felt I was spinning, riding and racing without brakes. I continued rolling on.

I started two companion pieces, playing with swirls of color and movement. I went from one to the other, back, forth, adding color, painting color out, adding lines and texture, repainting. I was caught between two competing spins. They were noisy.

Discouraged, I left the studio to take a break from those two bossy paintings.

I listened to music as I puttered and pondered. I remembered a video of Glenn Gould, playing Bach’s The Art of Fugue. His right hand played a stunning piece in one voice until his left hand came in to play in another voice. It was breathtaking. Suddenly, I realized I had the makings of a fugue in my studio. I needed to bring the competing images of the two together as counterpoints in different but equal voices.

So I placed the paintings on opposite sides of the room, working on them separately, but as contrapuntal partners. Music does make the world go round!
